Playing the echo

This is a past event from Manchester Science Festival 2016.

Hear about echoes and the distortions caused by curves, then listen as two percussionists demonstrate the strange acoustic properties of the reading room at one of Manchester’s biggest libraries. You can create your own unique listening experience through the path you take in the room, then take part in a Q&A session.

The talk includes a virtual tour of the world, including the spherical Mapparium in Boston, where the curve allows you to whisper into your own ear; and Richard Serra’s colossal sculptures in the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, which act like whispering galleries.
