Placebo: The Power of the Placebo Effect

Part of Clod Ensemble's Placebo

This is a past event from Manchester Science Festival 2018.

Can belief make you better? You better believe it. Despite being an age old tool for practicing medics, the placebo effect has only recently become the subject of serious scientific investigation. Our panel brings together ideas from philosophy, science and the arts to discuss what we know, what we don’t, and what we need to better understand this incredible phenomenon and even harness its power.

Our panel includes:

  • Jeremy Howick, Senior Researcher and Director of the Oxford Empathy Programme, University of Oxford
  • Anthony Jones, Professor of Neuro-rheumatology, University of Manchester
  • Ria Hartley, Interdisciplinary Artist, Researcher, Activist and Educator based in Manchester
  • Chaired by: Anita Shervington, Community Engagement Consultant and Director of Community Perspectives
