Thousands came to Manchester on 15 September 1830 for the opening of the world’s first railway station, Liverpool Road, but it all went wrong. The President of the Board of Trade was run over by a loco and the mob wouldn’t let the Duke of Wellington get to his luncheon. Nevertheless the railways soon took off and the country was criss-crossed with tracks.
