Following in The Heart of Darkness tradition, Edward Docx’s new novel, The Devil’s Garden, is a thrilling exploration of human nature. It tells the story of Dr Forle, a scientist based on a river station deep in the heart of the South American jungle. Forle’s research is interrupted by the arrival of a ruthless Colonel and sinister Judge, drawing him into a world of brutality and corruption.
Docx’s previous novels are The Calligrapher, and Self Help, which was long-listed for the Man Booker Prize 2007, and won the Geoffrey Faber Memorial Prize.
Scientist Johan Oldekop is currently researching biodiversity and indigenous peoples. Join them for a fascinating discussion which promises to touch upon theories of evolution, religion and anthropological research in the Amazon. This event is presented in association with Manchester Literature Festival.
