Chemistry, History, Manchester science
Although recognised as a son of Manchester John Dalton was a Cumbrian man who came to Manchester to teach. He is best known in the Portico Library as “’The Clock Man’” because he looked after the clock, and probably the wind-dial, installed in the Library. Research chemist and Cumbrian Tom Smith will reveal the deeper story of the man who changed the whole face of chemistry when he proposed his Atomic Theory.
