The Midland Hotel Supports a duo of Festivals in the North West

Monday 17 October 2011

On 19th October, The Midland Hotel in Manchester is supporting not one, but two festivals in the North West; The Manchester Literature Festival and The Manchester Science Festival.

The Manchester Science Festival

From 10.30am – 12 noon, a trio of singing scientists from MOSI (Museum of Science and Industry), Stephen Howe, Lee Wolstenholme and Jamie Eagleton will be performing at the hotel whilst dressed in period costume to represent the respective characters of famous Manchester scientists John Dalton (1744-1844), William Perkin (1838-1907) and the only living scientist of the three, Bernard Lovell (born 1913). Why not drop in for a pot of tea and the chance to hear a unique part of Manchester’s scientific history in song.

The Manchester Literature Festival

From 3pm – 4.30pm, Patricia Dunker, The Midland Hotel’s official “Writer in Residence” will be reading her commissioned short story to celebrate The Manchester Literature Festival followed by Afternoon Tea in The French Restaurant. Patricia has been the hotel’s “Writer in Residence” since April 2011 and has been exploring the hotel, as well as speaking with guests, to find inspiration for her story. Patricia's story will also be made available for audiences to read online after the event via the festival website: www.manchesterliteraturefestival.co.uk .

Mike Magrane, General Manager of The Midland Hotel said: “We are excited to be supporting both the Manchester Literature Festival and Manchester Science Festival. These initiatives are part of our ongoing commitment to support the arts and culture scene in Manchester.”

And part of both festivals is The Midland Future Manchester Competition, which invites young writers ages 12 – 16, to write a fictional short story set at least 10 years in the future. The deadline for entering the competition is 5pm on Monday 5th March 2012. For more information please visit www.manchestersciencefestival.com
